How to Make Homemade Blackhead Remover

Blackheads are clogged hair follicles that appear dark or black on the surface of the skin, and may be raised or bumpy. Blackheads most often show up around your nose, but can also appear on your cheeks, skin and forehead. While a number of different products promise to reduce or eliminate blackheads, it’s possible to make a homemade blackhead remover yourself using ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen or bathroom.

Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub
Baking soda is perhaps the most common at-home ingredient used for blackhead removal. It is a natural antiseptic, and the small granules can help clear away dirt and bacteria that cause blackheads.

Add about a tablespoon of baking soda to a small bowl or dish, then add a few drops of water, just until you can form a medium to thick paste. If the mixture is watery, add more baking soda until you achieve the correct consistency. After cleaning and drying your face, gently rub the baking soda mixture onto your skin, massaging it in circles for three to five minutes. Then, rinse your skin with warm water, pat dry with a towel and apply a gentle moisturizer.

Egg White Mask
Use egg whites to form a mask that functions much like a blackhead-removing pore strip, pulling out the blackheads and tightening pores to reduce their appearance. Wash your face thoroughly and dry it with a clean cotton towel. Separate the whites of one large egg and discard the yolk. From here, you can try either of two methods.

With the first method, spread the egg white over the desired area of your face or body using a clean paintbrush or your fingers and allow it to dry for a minute or so. Spread another layer over the same area and let it dry for 15 minutes. When it is completely dry and feels very tight, rinse off the egg whites with a warm washcloth.

For the second method, spread a single layer of egg white over your skin, then immediately apply a piece of toilet paper or tissue over the area. Allow the tissue to dry, then add another layer of egg white on top of the paper. Allow the tissue to dry completely, then rip it off quickly like a pore strip and thoroughly rinse the skin with warm water.

Honey Cream
Honey is a go-to ingredient for removing blackheads and can be used as an effective and restorative facial cream. It is also naturally antibacterial and may therefore help remove the dirt and bacteria causing your blackheads.

Pour about a tablespoon of honey into a dish or bowl and heat in the microwave until it’s easy to stir and spread. Thoroughly wash and dry your face and hands, then apply the honey mixture to the blackhead areas, gently rubbing it in until it blends into the skin. You can leave the honey on the skin and go about your day, though you should be careful not to apply makeup over it. Otherwise, you can gently rinse it off using warm water, then pat the skin dry with a clean towel and apply a gentle moisturizer to the area.

Lemon Juice Toner
Lemon juice is a natural astringent, and may therefore help tighten and reduce the appearance of pores much like a toner. This is a good method to use before going to bed, since the lemon juice will work all night long at shrinking pores. Also, this method may be too harsh to use during the day, as lemon juice can lighten skin and make it more sensitive to the sun.

Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a small dish or bowl. Do not use bottled lemon juice, as it contains preservatives and will not be as effective on your skin. Rinse your face with water and pat dry with a clean towel. Pour the lemon juice onto a cotton ball or tissue and dab it onto your skin. In the morning, rinse off the dried lemon juice with warm water and a mild cleanser.
